What is Karma?

Karma basic

KARMAcp IS a much more complex concept than 'an eye for an eyeи, a tooth for a tooth.' It is the law of cause and effect in operation: what goes around, comes around. The word karma means 'action.' What has been put into effect at some time in the past has an outcome in the present or in the future.

UNDERSTANDING KARMA

The traditional view of karma says that you will reap what you have sown. But karma also shows where balance is needed. The working out of karma may involve reparation, or even retribution, for past actions. But it also involves reward and restitution. It does not simply stem from actions and events. It encompasses attitudes, thoughts, and desires—and ingrained reactions that have become a habit and that need to be outgrown. What you desire today becomes your apparent fate tomorrow.
Karma is neutral, neither "good" nor "bad" (although its effects may sometimes be experienced as "bad karma" coming home to roost). What has been set in motion is having an effect that can be positive and constructive, or debilitating and, apparently, destructive. Karma is not static and unchanging. You are continually setting karma in motion, just as you are constantly reaping your past karma. Karma is active now, not just in your past. What you set in motion today will have consequences. These consequences may become apparent in five minutes' time, in a week, in a year or two, or in another lifetime altogether. If you understand the workings of karma, you can set positive, constructive karma in motion as you fulfill your highest potential and master your karmic lessons.

PAST LIFE ASTROLOGY AND KARMA

Past life astrology looks at the planetary placements and aspects in your birthchart to ascertain your karma. Everything in your chart can be manifested constructivelv or destructively. Karma is purposeful, concerned with growth and evolution, rather than punishment; it is an ongoing lesson. Therefore, understanding your birthchart from the karmic point of view will help you to understand why you are here and what you hope to achieve.
KARMA AND DESTINY
f you believe in karma and reincarnation, then you believe that you are in a purposeful incarnation: that you are fulfilling your destiny. Some people would call it fate, but fate is firmly fixed and cannot be changed, whereas destiny is an evolving future. Karmic astrology believes in free will and the power to change the future. The birthchart shows the pattern you have laid down— your fate or destiny—but it also shows where you can use your free will to grow and to find a positive outcome for your karma.
A KARMIC GUIDE

The moment of your birth is a guidebook to your previous lives and your present one. So, to understand fully the working of karma and its implications, you need your birthchart. Your date of birth gives you some clues. In karmic astrology the Sun represents what you are trying to develop, the qualities you are endeavoring to incorporate into your eternal being. It shows what your soul—the vehicle for your eternal Self—needs to experience. A chart for your time of birth gives fuller information. The North Node of the Moon, for instance, indicates your soul's purpose according to the sign in which it is placed. The South Node of the Moon and the sign in which the Moon was placed when you were born, tell you about your soul's history and the deeply ingrained emotional response you have built up over many lives. Your Moon placement also shows what you need to nurture and comfort you.

The chart maps out patterns stemming from karma and can be seen as showing your "fate." However, this fate is not fixed. The chart also shows your potential. Your free will allows you to choose the way forward, to embrace freely the lessons you have set  yourself, and to develop the possibilities inherent in your chart. Karma is all-embracing and has many manifestations. It operates at different levels (see opposite), from the personal to the universal. Not all types of karma are active at once. You usually choose one or two aspects to work on in your present incarnation and put others "on hold" for another life.

INFLUENCES ON KARMA
Aside from the broad canvas of what Sun- and Moon-signs indicate, it is usual to find one or two themes running through a birthchart (shown by planetary placements and their geometric relationships to each other), indicating what you have selected to work on at the present time.
Common themes revolve around "Love" (the planet Venus), "Will/Assertion" (Mars), or "Power" (Pluto), but there are several others. You may have elected to look at these themes from a broad perspective, bringing together strands you have explored in many lives, or to concentrate on one aspect only. You could be looking at all aspects of love, for example, or working only on developing unconditional love.
Three things particularly affect karma. Desire is a powerful manifester of karma. We create what we want, need, or crave. The strength of desire can transcend death and pull you back into incarnation to deal with unfinished business. It creates life scripts; plans you follow involuntarily. Much of the karma you have to deal with is from desire or will. In the birthchart, Mars and Pluto and the aspects other planets make to them are indicators of desire and the force of your will. Purpose is what you have reincarnated to do and it can overcome destructive desires. Purpose is shown both in your sign and the of the Moon. Grace often strengthens your purpose and helps it to manifest. Grace is an offer from the highest part of your being to release your karma. There are some lessons or situations that cannot be continued with, perhaps because they concern another person who is unwilling to learn. Grace says that when you have done all you can, you can let it go and no further karma will accrue. Grace is the highest vibration of your birthchart, representing your eternal, spiritual self.

Karmic Levels

Personal Karma: Karma carried from life to life by an individual soul. What you have created in the past and incarnate to deal with for yourself. (Personal karma is the birthchart.) It can be overridden by

  • Group or Racial Karma: Karma that belongs to a group of people. The group can vary in size from a family, or group of friends, to a tribe or race of people. Most people involved in group karma have incarnated into that group before. (Indications of group karma are seen in the Eleventh House of your chart.)
  • Collective Karma: Collective karma arises from all that has gone before. In a sense it is the karma of the human race. Although positive collective karma is generated, it is the negative karma that creates problems for future generations. No one person is responsible for it in the sense of having personally created it. Individuals may have been part of its manifestation in other lives; taking part in wars, purges, ideologies, and other collective movements. Certain people incarnate with the intention of taking on part of this collective karma and clearing it for the wider whole. (Indications of collective karma may be seen in the Twelfth House, Pisces, and Moon in Capricorn.)
  • Cosmic Karmanetshatter: The cosmos needs to grow and to evolve. Cosmic karma is the spiritual karma of humankind, and can override all other karmas. It can be seen in new religions that sweep through the world, or in the urge to explore outer, and inner, space. Cosmic karma is strongly connected to the need for each individual to evolve and to recognize, and take responsibility for, their part in the whole. (Cosmic karma is beyond your birthchart.)

Types of Karma

cpMerit karma
This is a reward for all the things you got right in your past lives, all the lessons you learned, all the insights you put into practice. It is money in your karmic piggy bankfarmer babe. It often manifests as a talent in the present life.

western zodiacChart indicators: "Easy" aspects or specific planetary placements, especially linked to the Second House
cpRecompense karma

Recompense karma is a reward or recognition for the things that you "got right" in the past, or for the sacrifices you made in order to help others. If, for example, you put your ambitions or a relationship on hold to care for someone who needed your help, then that person could well come back as a good friend who helps you out in the present incarnation
western zodiacChart indicators: Helpful planetary placements and smooth, harmonious aspects and interaspects.>

cpRedemptive karma
Some people incarnate to help others or to do something for the world. Other people take on tasks that will help to clear collective karma.
western zodiacChart indicators: People with strong redemptive karma often have an emphasis on the planet Neptune or theoneminutechange. Clearing collective karma is shown in a oneminutechange placement of the North Node

cpRetributive karma
Karma that boomerangs. The classic "eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth" doctrine that says, for instance, if someone chopped off another person's hand in a former life, they are likely to have a paralyzed hand in the present life, or to lose the use of their hand in some way. In other words, what you have done to others comes back to you.
western zodiacChart indicators: Extremely challenging aspects and planetary placements, emphasis on the Sixth—Twelfth House axis

cpAttitudinal karma

Attitudinal karma has usually been present during several lives. An intransigent attitude, ingrained behavior, or an intractable or habitual emotional stance results in some form of dis-ease, often at the physical level, during the present incarnation. So, for example, believing there would "never be enough" could manifest as an addiction. Arterial or heart problems could develop from "hard-heartedness" or a broken heart. Having an attachment to an ideal may also create karma.
western zodiacChart indicators: Reflected in fixed planetary aspects and the Sixth House

cpOrganic karma

Organic karma is rather like attitudinal karma. It reflects injuries or conditions from other lives.

Overindulgence in a former life, for instance, could manifest as obesity or liver problems in the present. If you died weakened by too much bloodletting, you could now suffer from anemia.
A past life back injury could underlie a chronic back problem; tuberculosis could result in present-life lung disease.

western zodiacChart indicators:The Sixth House.
cpKarmic treadmill

Destructive patterns that have not been outgrown are like a karmic treadmill. The same old thing goes around and around. Alcoholism is one example; relationships can provide many other examples.

western zodiacChart indicators: Difficult aspects and a preponderance of planets in a fixed sign.

cpWork karma
How you wrere employed in the past can have repercussions in the present and some people incarnate to continue their previous work (vocational karma).
Someone may have been a healer or doctor, for instance, and bring with them into the present life the urge to heal.
A former monk or nun could feel that they have a religious vocation in the present life, a musician the urge to continue with music. The karma of work arises from several different past life causes. Previous lack of integrity, for instance, may manifest as someone who, in this life, is cheated by someone.
Having been a factory owner whose inadequate safety measures were responsible for many deaths, could underlie an urge to be a safety or fire officer in the present life.
Positive work karma could create skills to be drawn on in the present life. Technological karma stems from having had to make ethical decisions about the use, or misuse, of technology—or fighting against the introduction of new technology. It can relate to all periods in history but may go back in time as far as Atlantis or, more recently, to the Industrial and Technological Revolutions and their effects on people's lives.

western zodiacChart indicators: Sixth and Tenth Houses. Technological: Uranus, especially in the Sixth or Twelfth House. Planets in the Sixth and Tenth Houses are particularly relevant to vocations
cpSymbolic karma

Not all karma is immediately obvious; symbolic karma can take some unraveling. The present life condition svmbolizes what was done in the past. A witch-ducker in a former life might be incarnated as a bedwetter, for example.
western zodiacChart indicators: Aspects to appropriate planets and placements of planets in signs and houses delineate this karma.

cpCommunication karma
How and what you choose to communicate can lead to karma. Gossiping over the fence, spreading scandal or untruth of all kinds, slandering or criticizing people, difficulty in communicating thoughts, feelings, and beliefs can create situations in this life.
Included in communication karma are ideology, hypocrisy, and mockery. Attachment to a belief, no matter how worthy, can create ideological karma. Imposing beliefs on other people also creates this karma. The beliefs may be religious, philosophical, or purely secular. But the karma has to be met in the current life.
Having said or done things a certain way, while believing something different, gives rise to the karma of hypocrisy. So does the "anything for a quiet life" approach. Hypocrisy arises from a lack of spiritual conviction and inner truth, or a betrayal of truth. A life then arises when that inner foundation has to be regained.<
Mocking other people's afflictions, thoughts, beliefs, or actions gives rise to the karma of mockery. It is based on not valuing the path that another person travels. One such example is when you debase or make fun of someone else so that you can feel superior. The person who mocks often finds him- or herself living out in the present life the circumstances he or she so despised in a past life.

western zodiacChart indicators: Aspects to Mercury and its house placement point to the source. The Ninth House has to do with ideology, the Third House with gossip, and the Twelfth with slander

cpSins of omission and commission
What you do not do can be as karmically significant as what you do. If you have always behaved in a certain way, or consistently refused to take action or learn a lesson, then the karma comes around and around, again and again, until you get the message.
western zodiacChart indicators: Difficult, fixed aspects or an emphasis on sextiles.

cpRelationship karma
Relationship karma has many aspects. A couple may be brought together by true love, but this is not always so. Some people will not let go of someone they "love," and have to come back with that person until they can do so. The lesson can be painful, especially when the other person does not recognize the "love." Retribution can be part of relationship karma, as can recompense and reparation. It operates in families, groups, and work situations.

western zodiacChart indicators: Fifth, Seventh, and Eighth Houses and aspects to Venus.

cpPacts and promises

The pacts and promises you made in a past life can strongly affect the present. They may involve another person or be personal. If you promised always to be there for someone, you might have to deal with the resulting relationship karma. If you once made a vow of celibacy it could strongly affect your sexual life in the present incarnation and a vow of poverty could seriously affect your material wealth in the present life.

western zodiacChart indicators:This depends on the vow. For example, celibacy: Saturn in the Eighth House, difficult Mars or Venus aspects; poverty: Saturn in the Second or Eighth House, or in Taurus, or in aspect to Jupiter. Relationship promises involve personal planet interaspects with Saturn and Neptune

cpKarma-in-suspension
As not all karma can be dealt with at once, some of it remains in suspension to be dealt with at some other time—which may or may not occur during the present life.

western zodiacChart indicators: Wide connections between planets may indicate karma in suspension, especially if they will "catch up" and come into close orb at some time during your life

cpKarma-in-the-making
What goes on in the present creates future karma. Remembering that each of your thoughts, deeds, actions, and beliefs creates what you will be is a way to bring positive karma into your next life.
western zodiacChart indicators:Cardinal squares and one-way interaspects between charts.

Houses The Inner and Outer Universes of Experience

Houses The Inner and Outer Universes of Experience

Astrology's basic tool, the natal chart, is divided into twelve sections, called the "houses of the zodiac." In order to begin to absorb the basics of astrology, we need to see how this field operates and how the houses relate one to another. The field is the background map for all the action of the planets, the Sun, and the Moon.

The houses are called "Mundane Houses," to differentiate between them and the "Celestial Houses" namely the 12  signs of the Zodiac; but generally they are designated as "houses" only.

It is the angle of the stellar ray which determines its effect in our lives, planets which are in the East affect our physical constitution, planets in the South near the zenith are factors for good or ill where our social position is concerned.

If a planet is setting in the West at the time of our birth its ray strikes us in such a manner as to draw us to a certain type of marriage partner, and the planets under the earth, in the North, have an effect upon our condition in the latter part of life. Let us suppose for illustration of the point that someone is born at sunrise on a day when the Sun and Jupiter are in conjunction. Then they strike him from the eastern angle and give him splendid vitality. Another born on the same day at noon when Jupiter and the Sun are in the zenith position may have a very poor, weak body if other planets in the East are adverse, but the ray of the Sun and Jupiter falling or his birth figure from the South will certainly attract to him attention in his social sphere and make him the recipient of public favor and honor. Another born on the same day, when the Sun and Jupiter are setting in the West may be an outcast if planets in the East and South so decree, but the benefic ray of the Sun and Jupiter from the Western angle will make him beloved of his mate and successful in partnerships. These facts have been ascertained by observation and tabulation. Therefore the twelve sections of the circle of observation as seen from the birthplace are truly said to rule or govern various departments of life and thus people born on the same day may have the most diverse experiences.

The houses may be variously grouped according to the influence they exercise in our lives; there are "Angular," "Succedent" and "Cadent" houses, also personal, spiritual, material, social and mystical houses.

ANGULAR

Of the angles, the first house governs our personal self, and its opposite the seventh house, rules the one who is nearest and dearest to us, namely, the marriage partner. The fourth house determines conditions in our home and its opposite angle, the tenth house, shows our social standing in the community where we live. Thus the angles show collectively the sphere of our activities in life.

SUCCEDENT  2511

Of the succedent houses the second shows our financial status with regard to that which we acquire by our own efforts and the opposite succedent house, the eight, shows whatever we may receive from others as legacies, etc. The other succedent houses, the fifth and eleventh, show how our income may be spent, for the fifth house indicates the children of our body who have a legitimate claim to a share of our income, and the eleventh house shows the children of our brains, our hopes, wishes and aspirations which also draw upon our resources.

Of the two pairs of cadent houses the sixth is the house of voluntary service which we perform as our share of the world's work for an equivalent share in the world's wealth, and the twelfth house shows how we may be compelled to labor without remuneration under prison restraint if we do not work willingly. The sixth house shows also the state of our health and the twelfth tells if hospital treatment is necessary.

Code 39  CADENT 3 –9

The other pair of cadent houses, the third and ninth show whether our life and work will confine us to one place or require travel and changes of residence. In this respect the third house shows short journeys and the ninth house long travels.

PERSONAL 1 –5 –9

The first house rules the constitution and peculiarities of the physical body. Planets and signs in that house put their stamp on it to make or mar according to the nature of its self-generated destiny. Our fifth house shows the quality of love-nature of the soul and the line of its expression if it follows the line of least resistance; and the ninth house shows as much of the spirit as we can apprehend in our present limited state.

MATERIAL TRINITY  2 –610

The material trinity of houses consists of the second, sixth and tenth and shows the worldly possessions of man, his means of obtaining them and the enjoyment they bring him. Wealth, or its reverse, is shown by the second house, health, without which there can be no joy in any worldly possession, is shown by the sixth house; and the public prestige which is the chief source of gratification to the average human being, is shown by the tenth house.

SOCIAL 3711

The social houses are the third, seventh, and eleventh houses and in them is shown the nature of our relations and various classes of souls we meet in life. Brothers and sisters to whom we are bound by the time of blood are shown by the third house, the companion of our heart with whom our blood blends in another way, is shown by the seventh house, and the friends, more precious than pearls to whoever has earned friendship, are designated by the eleventh house.

HIDDEN MYSTERIES 4812

The fourth and last trinity of houses is composed of the fourth, eighth and twelfth. If them are hidden mysteries of the ante-natal life of the spirit, and the post mortem experiences immediately to follow the terminus vitae. On the material plane the fourth house signifies our condition in the latter part of life, the twelfth shows the sorrow which impresses us with the worthlessness of material things and the eighth indicates the nature of our exit from the world's stage.

An illustration may further help the student to understand how the heavens influence our life through the twelve houses. Suppose we are out driving and our road follows the seacoast, but a mile or so inland. A breeze is blowing from the ocean and as it passes over the country separating us from the sea, it brings upon invisible wings messages from that land, which evoke pleasure or aversion according to their nature. In one place, an aroma of new mown hay fills us with delight; perhaps we are nauseated by the noxious smell of jasmine on the next stretch of our journey; and later become really ill from the stench of stagnant marsh-water. But then we enter a forest, and soon its grateful pine balm restores the normal health and spirits.

In our journey from the cradle to the grave we carry the twelve houses with us in the auric atmosphere surrounding us, as the air envelops the flying earth. Each house mirrors part of the life; each holds some of our life lessons; each represents how we have worked or shirked before in a given department of life's tasks. At the appropriate time of life we reap from each house what we have sown in past lives, that is, unless we forestall the harvest in time. Is our 11 house afflicted, do friends betray and forsake us, do they leave us heartsick, or nauseate us like the scent of jasmine and stagnant marsh-water? Then let us examine the horoscope for it reveals what is hidden in our auric atmosphere. The friends sensed us, and we then, through the eleventh angle, and something ill-smelling must be there. It may be, we long to be befriended, more than to befriend others. Let us cease to be like the sickly, debilitating jasmine, and seek to manifest the sturdy strength of the invigorating pine tree; then we shall find friend flocking around, admiring our strength. Not all have such sturdy natures, but we can attract equally by kindliness, as soothing to sorrowing hearts as perfume of new mown hay to the sense, and thus we may rid the house of friends of affliction

1st House

THE FIRST HOUSE

  •  Outer Influences:oneminutechange

The 1st House shows how the soul feels about coming into incarnation and what it expects to meet. The sign on the  or   the First House  shows how the soul goes out to meet the world. Aries is pushy and assertive,  Taurus  much slower and more deliberate,   Gemini chatty and frenetic, and so on. The  or  is what you notice first about people, and it can disguise their true self.

There is a theory in karmic astrology that the  or  is the sign in which the was placed in the last life and so it is learned behavior.

Planets that are close to the  or  show up early in life, those farther away make themselves felt later.

A soul with Saturn placed here incarnates expecting life, and especially childhood, to be difficult. It carries a karmic burden, duty, or responsibility. Luckily for this soul, life improves greatly once it has reached maturity and the task can be got to grips with.

With Uranus, the soul is on a different path. Chaotic and catalytic, it makes things change. It expects the world to be unstable and unpredictable—after all, that is what it is used to. It is here to break the patterns of the past and release new possibilities.
Intense and powerful, Pluto in the 1st House is very aware that birth is a death from the spiritual realm. Indeed, birth is often life-threatening—which may reflect a deep ambivalence about incarnation. Pluto is all about power, and power struggles may well feature throughout life. This is a soul that is on the path of transformation

The six polarities, the questions they raise, and some applicable universal resolutions and teachings about these issues. As we do, see if you can figure out where your lies, and if you have your chart, check to see if your intuition is accurate.

  • Polarity One: oneminutechange<->oneminutechange

The first polarity turns around the issues of self/other. Am I deeply immersed in myself and not relating to others? Or, am I so caught up in a relationship that I have forgotten who I am? Resolution: merging. As you discover who you are, give all that you find to your partner. As you are immersed in the other, see clearly and deeply that you are your partner. Teaching: the Mayan saying "In Lak'etch, I'll Taken"—"I am yourself, you are another. "

  • Inner Influences:Vault Id

At some level, we ask ourselves this question every day, and the answer can come only from life experience. Knowing who we are and why we came is life's big project.

Once our identity is established, we begin to "ground" ourselves, which is the agenda of the 2nd house.

2nd House

THE SECOND HOUSE

  • Outer Influences:oneminutechange

The karmic resources you have brought back with you (money to spend on your karmic credit card, so to speak) and the things that you have developed in the past show up in this house. Planets placed here indicate the skills, talents, and resources you have accumulated over many lifetimes.

They show the karmic resources according to their nature: Chiron has healing power; Venus knows how to relate; Mars has learned assertion; Mercury can communicate well, and so on.

If you are someone who only has to think about things and they come into being, or who always has money, or finds that help arrives at just the right moment, then you probably have Jupiter placed here and have been working on abundance in the past— many spiritual disciplines taught their students how to manifest what they needed.
If you have poverty consciousness and don't feel worthy of abundance, then it is a pretty safe bet that you took a vow of poverty somewhere in a past life and the wonderful expansive cornucopia that is Jupiter is being sat on rather heavily by the finger-wagging Lord of Karma, Saturn, who is saying "Remember that vow!"This is especially likely if Saturn is in the 2nd House. Creative reframing and renegotiating of that vow are called for so that karmic wisdom can emerge.

  • Polarity Two: oneminutechange<->oneminutechange

The second polarity turns around the issues of grounding and emptying. Am I stuck in a house in the midst of a fifteen-year accumulation of possessions and feeling like I can never leave? Or, have I so let go of things I need for living that I am not grounded? Resolution: higher ethical sensitivity. Take for yourself what you really need from the Earth and enjoy all your pleasures. Let go of every single thing in your life that is not frequently needed or used. Teaching: the Native American saying "The Earth is your Mother and she freely offers to you all that you need. "

  • Inner Influences:Vault Id

The 2nd house represents a horizontal development; it is a "spreading out" of ourselves, and our whole life unfoldment depends upon an adequate development of this foundation. We have to gather effectively what we need in order to take the journey through time.

3rd House

THE THIRD HOUSE

  •  Outer Influences:oneminutechange

The 3rd House indicates both communication and sibling karma. Of particular significance is Saturn, as it shows a karmic block on communication that may arise out of physical handicaps, such as deafness or having your tongue cut out in a former life. The soul often feels very unintelligent indeed and has to reconnect to its natural intelligence once more. Pluto may indicate power struggles around what is, or has been, communicated, and struggles with a sibling. Chiron almost always shows that a sibling carries a wound from a former life, and may show communication wounds as well. When Neptune is placed in the Third House the soul rarely feels it belongs—either to the family or on earth at all. This is a placement of alienation and other-worldliness.

Polarity Three: oneminutechange<->oneminutechange
The third polarity turns around the issue of integrating in ordinary reality and connecting with spiritual realms. Am I so hooked on my computer, fax machine, telephone, and plane flights that I haven't had a mystical thought or feeling in months? Or, am I so spiritually obsessed that I can't stand ordinary reality, which is falling apart because of my lack of attention to details? Resolution: integration of self as vessel of spirit. Find the spiritual dimension daily within every act in your life. As you meditate, connect everything you feel and know with everything and everyone in your life. Teaching: the Zen Buddhist saying "With right words and actions, spirit resides in the heart. "

  • Inner Influences:Vault Id

The 3rd house rules communications and integration of the self, and its question is "How do I fit into my reality?" How do I express myself in the world I inhabit in order to get what I need and carry on with a healthy sense of who I am? The key words are fitting in, and everybody spends an amazing amount of time trying to do just this.

The 3rd house is a tricky house. Many of us think we have our links to outside reality all figured out, and then we end up in a workshop or party where we feel like we must be from Mars, judging by how other people seem to be reacting to us. The stronger the early identity and sense of values the better, because a really supportive childhood tends to widen the field into which we can "fit." The more we explore different realities as quickly as possible, the more we can easily fit into whatever circumstance in which we may find ourselves.

The 3rd house rules education, which broadens our field of activity. It also rules all the skills of getting along in foreign locations—language skills and the ability to be comfortable with new people. The foundation of our ability to broaden is our basic sense of self, and the opportunity is dependent upon getting what we need, since the chance to obtain the integration skills needed to fit into as many realities as possible is dependent upon material support. Most of all, we need a strong ego or developed sense of self intact within its boundaries in order to explore new realities.
As we move out of the first three houses and go into the second three, notice that we will lack the courage to explore the next  3 houses unless we have an ego, we are grounded, and we are functionally integrated.

4th House

Next let us examine the qualities of the 4th through 6th houses.

THE FOURTH  HOUSE

  •  Outer Influences:oneminutechange

This is the parental axis of the chart.

It shows karma with parents and expectations around parenting. When the outer planets are placed in these houses, thev also describe the karmic contact with the parents. Pluto is heavy, with power struggles and a need to break free from symbiosis. Saturn is also heavy and may be disappointed in, or a disappointment to, the parents. The soul is not valued as a unique person, nor did it expect to be. This is the soul that is learning to parent itself. Neptune has wonderful illusions about parents, but the parent is never really there. Chiron may show a wounded parent or a wounding home, the soul incarnated expecting painful parenting.

Polarity Four: oneminutechange<->oneminutechange
The fourth polarity turns around the issue of inner knowing and outer power. Am I so deeply involved in my home or inner subconscious exploration that I am disempowered in the world out there? Or, am I so involved in power struggles that I have forgotten exploration of my inner world? Resolution: inner energies create outer reality. Here you explore your subconscious, come to know your shadows, and find respect for the power of inner urges. As you revel in exercising power in the world, in freely giving of your personal power, you recognize that everything you know comes from the pool of all the desires and visions of Earth and its inhabitants from the beginning of time. Teaching: the New Age saying " You create your own reality. "

  • Inner Influences:Vault Id

The 4th house is the realm of the unconscious. It is the "nest" from which we emerge, and the key word is feeling. The 4th house rules our sense of home throughout life, as well as our ability to feel safe on planet Earth. This is the area of astrological analysis that attempts to determine the solidity of the emotional structure of a person. If 4th house issues—our deepest attachments to loved ones—get disturbed by early childhood trauma, such pain and separations can be healed later in life through therapy and/or life with new people who love us.The model child we observed in the first three houses would be comfortable with normal human stresses and normal occasional anger and/or boundary difficulties, deeply inside and integrate the unconscious, we will possess a basic trust in our lives. We will not be afraid of the hidden or unexpected events of life.

Once we have been able to explore and integrate the core of our being, we move to the 5th house of creativity and erotic sexuality.

5th House

 THE FIFTH HOUSE

  • Outer Influences:oneminutechange

The most significant karmic placement in the creative 5th House is Saturn. This planet usually indicates delay or difficulty in conceiving a child—or other creative project. It is as though the soul has not valued its creations sufficiently in the past, and now has to struggle with this. When Pluto is placed here, the lesson may be to be creative in a nonbiological way.

Polarity Five: oneminutechange<->oneminutechange
The fifth polarity turns around desires and giving away. Am I so involved in my creativity that I pay no attention to giving to others? Or, am I giving everything all day to people who need me and paying no attention to the needs of my inner child?Resolution: playing creates service. As your child within plays and creates, you then know how to give from that wellspring of delight. Teaching: the creation spirituality saying "As the Divine plays, God/Goddess creates through humankind. "

  • Inner Influences:Vault Id

Many artists are masters of the 5th house. They have learned to not resist sinking into the dark, the deepest part of self. When the journey through this shadow is complete, there is emptiness in which to form new creation. Like the 2nd house, the 5th house expands us horizontally, and this development of creativity opens us to new communication and integration skills.

The key word is the inner child; this is the pool of our desires that come from childhood pleasures and/or deprivations, and as adults we can't get the child to express itself comfortably without having faced the deep-seated desires of the 4th house. Some of the most creative adults I have seen are those who were allowed to really develop their inner child when they were small. That is, the least-controlled childhood environments are the best, provided the environment is structured and not chaotic. The inner child can know how to satisfy its sexual and creative drives in an adult environment, and such adults are less prone to addiction and manipulation of others.

6th House

We move into the 6th house once we have really found the child, our inner delight.

THE SIXTH HOUSE

  • Outer Influences:oneminutechange

This is the House of Health and Vocations. It shows "body karma," the dis-ease of the soul . It can also indicate the continuance of an old vocation toward healing or service— Chiron, Saturn, Neptune, and Pluto—or a karmic need to undertake service in reparation or as a means of soul growth.

Polarity Six: oneminutechange<->oneminutechange
The sixth polarity turns around being in the moment and letting go into divine fusion. Am I so obsessed with my responsibilities that I have lost contact with spirit? Am I so involved in mystical contemplation that I am not existing in the moment, in ordinary reality? If Spirit walked in the back door of my house or filled my car with gas, would I see her/him? Resolution: be here now. As you fulfill your duties, notice how absolute focus moves you right into deep cosmic joy. As you contemplate the Divine, notice how it is most easily found in the smallest and most obscure places. Teaching: from the mythological centaur Chiron, "In the energy of each moment the divine exists. "

  • Inner Influences:Vault Id

The 6th house is healing power. Its key words are "Be here now!" It represents our ability to be in the present moment instead of having our consciousness in the past or future or in another location. Being able to heal ourselves and others is based upon the ability to be in the present moment.

From a practical standpoint, we must find our correct work in order to be a healing instead of a destructive force. Therefore, the 6th house rules the search for meaningful work, and a hierarchy of power and money makes it hard for people to discover their inherent dignity through expressing themselves in work. We all need to succeed in the process of work in order to find ourselves. The 6th house is the starting line for just about everybody; we must find meaningful work in this world so that we can begin to evolve. Also, most people first discover how to be in the moment during engrossing work projects that enable them to filter out all their other conflicts as well as the undeveloped aspects of self.

It is instructive to move through the first six houses in reverse in order to see how the 6th house is the awakening point for most people. This is because Western cultures are extremely dysfunctional at this time, and few people reflect the idealized development of self presented by the first six houses of the zodiac. Nondysfunctional people seem to be an endangered species!

So, let us move in reverse for a moment in order to better comprehend the qualities of the lower houses before we explore the upper six houses.

7th House

The 7th Through 9th Houses of the Zodiac

THE SEVENTH HOUSE

  • Outer Influences: oneminutechange<->oneminutechange

This is the relationship House in the widest sense of the word and the karma involved is set out in Past Lives and Relationships

This House sets out your track H record in the past, and the issues you have to work on now. It covers all aspects of relationship: lovers, marriage, business, and open enemies.

Saturn in the Seventh, for instance, works on relationship debts: there is karma between partners. Freedom-loving Uranus is the commitment-phobic planet. It indicates past difficulties in committing fully to a relationship—and present life relationships may need a lot of space. This is the aspect of divorce because one partner grows and the other doesn't, necessitating a change if the soul is to continue to develop.

If Neptune is placed here, you searched for perfect love and you may well have suffered from illusions and delusions in the past. Jupiter may indicate that you have learned how to have good relationships, but may also indicate old excess or self-indulgence. If Pluto sits here, you will reap the repercussions of ancient power struggles. Mars is more straightforward aggression, indicating that the battles may have been personal or group-orientated.
With Mercury, there is communication karma around relationships, so misunderstandings could well arise. When
sensuous Venus makes herself known, the karma is around a past interaction. With the Sun or Moon in this House, the present life partner may have been a past life parent; or the present life parent may have been a past life partner. Either way, confusions may arise as to who is parenting whom.

KARMIC CONTACTS
A soul will often attract a partner with whom there has been previous contact and with whom there is unfinished business. Promises have to be kept, reparation may be needed, breaking away may be called for. The connection and the reason for coming back into incarnation together, is laid out in the interaction between the two charts

PERSONAL OR GENERAL?
If an interaspect  goes one way from an outer planet in one chart to a personal planet in the other, this is an issue that may arise or which both happen to be working on but it was not created by the two people concerned. If the aspect is repeated by each personal planet aspecting the same outer planet in the other chart, it is personal and was created by the two people concerned. One-way aspects act as a rehearsal for dealing with the big issue. Both-way aspects are that issue. The general has become the specific.

EXPECTATIONS AROUND LOVE
The soul attracts to itself relationships and situations that mirror the expectations it has around love. So, a soul carrying the expectation that "love hurts" will often have early relationships that "prove exactly that. Someone carrying the expectation that he or she doesn't deserve to be loved may fall into a marriage that is cold and unfeeling. Where a soul is following a pattern of projecting power onto a partner (see pages 96—97), the old pattern reestablishes itself. But it is not only in love relationships that karmic expectations intervene. This tendency may attract an authoritarian employer. Many work-related issues are really those of relationship

SOULMATES
The idea of a soulmate, or twin soul, was set out by the Greek philosopher Plato in the Symposium. He describes ecstatically happy beings with one body, two heads, and four arms and legs, beings that were naturally complete in themselves and, seemingly, invincible. The overwhelming pride of the race to which these beings belonged caused them to attack the gods. As a punishment, Zeus, head of the gods, split them in half, forcing them to spend the rest of their lives yearning for their missing half. This is the archetypal search for the other half: the quest for the soulmate. Many people yearn for a soulmate who will make them feel complete.

SOULMATE ASPECTS
Perhaps the greatest karmic challenge arises in relationships that appear to be a soulmate connection. Knowingly or unknowingly, the soul is seeking its "other half," someone who makes it feel whole and complete. But illusions and delusions are rife—and so is karma. A person may feel like a soulmate, and yet want nothing to do with you. The greatest delusion is that there is only one soulmate. There can be many. A soulmate is frequently a companion from the past who is helping the soul learn a difficult lesson. It would perhaps be better to refer to this companion as a soul partner. The soul contract is set out across the charts.
When the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, or Neptune connect with the South or North Node, or when Venus contacts Neptune, across two charts the relationship may well feel like soulmates. The soul will say "This is the person I have been searching for all my life. I know him or her so well. I can tell what he or she is thinking, he or she is always in my head." And it will conclude, sometimes erroneously, "We are meant to be together." If the interaspects repeat, this is heightened

With North Node interaspects, or Venus contacting Neptune (especially when the interaspects repeat both ways, see page 132) the relationship triggers your karmic purpose for the present life or acts as a challenge to unconditional love, and could well indicate a soul partner you have been with for many lives.

However, with South Node interaspects, while you feel very close, you are learning to let go. The soul partner has to move on. If this is the case, it is likely to be a difficult and painful process. You are learning that a "soulmate" is not necessarily a once and for all "other half." It is particularly painful when, as can happen, the "other half" doesn't even recognize you in the present life. This is a challenge not to yearn for what might have been but to look out for your next soul partner who will have something new to teach you, fresh potential to explore.

The six polarities, the questions they raise, and some applicable universal resolutions and teachings about these issues. As we do, see if you can figure out where your Saturn lies, and if you have your chart, check to see if your intuition is accurate.

Polarity One: 1st and 7th Houses
The first polarity turns around the issues of self/other. Am I deeply immersed in myself and not relating to others? Or, am I so caught up in a relationship that I have forgotten who I am? Resolution: merging. As you discover who you are, give all that you find to your partner. As you are immersed in the other, see clearly and deeply that you are your partner. Teaching: the Mayan saying "In Lak'etch, I'll Taken"—"I am yourself, you are another. "

  • Inner Influences:Vault Id

The 7th house rules partnership, marriage, and the ability to learn from the other side. Not surprisingly, the key word is relationship. Recalling the polarity nature of the upper and lower houses, the 7th house is in polarity relationship with the 1st house—self-identity. The 1st house asks, "Who am I?" and the 7th house asks, "How can I deal with the other?"

The key word for the polarity is knowing. When this polarity is unresolved, we feel like we cannot ourselves grow while being pulled away from our self by the other. And as we relate to the other, we lose the sense of who we are. The unified maturity comes when we have attained enough sense of self so as to relate to the other without losing our own identity, thus finding a mirror of ourselves that offers self-knowledge. Then, the more we develop our individual potential, the more we have to give to the other, and the more we give to the other, the more we find out about ourselves.

8th House

 THE  EIGHTH HOUSE

  • Outer Influences: oneminutechange

The Eighth House is powerfully karmic, but its significance can be hard to judge as it keeps its secrets hidden. Saturn here may relate to old vows that need to be rescinded, or a need to confront fears of death. Chiron, too, often means a significant death, one that puts the soul on its path. As this House is about shared resources, Pluto can indicate old struggles in this direction and a need to explore the birth—death—rebirth cycle.

This house shows how you give and share yourself with others, and what you inherit from them. When Uranus is placed in the Eighth House it often indicates old ambivalence and ambiguity around sexuality and gender. The soul may have changed gender between lives, or have chosen to explore different modes of expressing sexuality. Uranus here can also indicate the commitment phobic who has difficulty in sharing intimacy with another, and who may have chosen celibacy as the easier path. Saturn here can indicate an old vow—perhaps of celibacy or fidelity—that is difficult to break away from.

Polarity Two:oneminutechange<-> oneminutechange

The 8th house rules emptying, letting go of everything that is not essential for evolution to our next level. Its key words are letting go. Therefore, the 8th house is deeply involved with death and how we feel about it. It is in polarity relationship with the 2nd house—grounding and material values. The 2nd house asks, "What do I need?" and the 8th house asks, "Wouldn't I be more clear if I had less?"

The key word for this polarity is values, or an ethical sense of how to use the resources of the planet. Needless to say, this polarity is very poorly comprehended on the planet at this time. When we are stuck in this duality, we may accumulate too many material possessions and have no room for spiritual contact, or we may empty too much, become ungrounded; we may even deny normal needs. The 9th house represents God/Goddess issues, for it rules connection with spirit, and we cannot get to spirit until we have lightened our load by the purification processes of the 8th house. Also, we cannot feel spirit until we are comfortable with emptiness.

9th House

THE NINTH HOUSE

  • Outer Influences: oneminutechange

This is the religious and philosophical House and the karma can be Dark and Heavy with undertones of fanaticism and enforced coercion (Pluto), or fixed rigidity and puritanical adherence to the rules of the religion (Saturn). The karma may have arisen around trying to bring in new ideas (Uranus), or becoming more mystically minded (Neptune). The soul may have decided to make reparation for past attitudes, or to follow a particular path to develop spirituality farther.

Polarity Three: oneminutechange<->oneminutechange

The 9th house is in polarity relationship with the 3rd house—the house of communication/integration—and the key word of the polarity axis is connecting. This polarity offers profound wisdom for us at this time.
In Western civilization, we have been experimenting with Eastern wisdom teachings for many decades, and this yearning for spirit is classic 9th house development, but the 3rd house integration process goes awry when one culture attempts to adopt the spiritual practices of another. Eastern philosophy, as it has been transferred to the West for the last thirty years, has been dangerously unbalanced in the 3rd/9th house polarity, since the spirituality (9th house) of indigenous cultures of the East does not integrate easily (3rd house) into Western environments.

The cultural integration of spiritual practices is more easily available to the seeker within his or her own heritage. For example, theologian Matthew Fox has shown in his book Original Blessing that spiritual practices from medieval mystical traditions are very deep for people in Western cultures, and I have found the Native American medicine teachings to be very profound for people in the Western Hemisphere.

When the 3rd and 9th houses are balanced, the spiritual seeker carefully integrates the self and communicates with spirit in a balanced way in the body. The balance of the 3rd/9th house polarity occurs when the seeker opens gradually and harmonically. It is critical to take time to integrate spiritual fire in the life while staying in healthy communication with others and living serenely. The seeker is thus in service to humanity while developing oneness with spirit. Successful resolution of mid-life crisis involves activating the vertical axis—Earth to sky—of awareness after the horizontal maturation into form during the first forty years of life. This activation is the work of the 3rd and 9th houses and the 4th and 10th houses, and the qualities of these houses tend to create great rushes of energy, energy that is actually kundalini rising. Notice how the growth in the lst/7th house and 2nd/8th house polarities is very horizontal and how the growth in the 3rd/9th house and 4th/10th house polarities is very vertical.

10th House

The 10th Through 12th Houses of the Zodiac

 THE TENTH HOUSE

  • Outer Influences:oneminutechange

Polarity Four: oneminutechange<->oneminutechange

The 10th house rules power—taking on our own power and utilizing our power in the world. Its key words are / am. It is in polarity relationship with the 4th house, the subconscious self, and the key word of the polarity axis is being: we cannot take on our power without full exploration of subconscious reality. Until we have fully integrated the deepest core of self, we will either abuse others with what power and control we have, or we will remain powerless.

The 4th and 10th houses of the zodiac, along with the 3rd and 9th, are where the greatest kundalini energy rise occurs. Therefore, great purification of emotional, spiritual, and power complexes is triggered, and this is where the greatest confusions lie. This clearance of confusion by kundalini purification fire is the essence of mid-life crisis. As we work with the intricacies of kundalini rising in this book, we must remember that our kundalini energy is our power, the basic life force, or eros. Triggered by Uranus, this liquid light floods our bodies with electromagnetic pulsation. As we cope with this increased energy at mid-life, the psychological and power complexes of the 4th and 10th houses must be exposed and then transmuted by a desire for life rather than death. Otherwise, some individuals become monsters of power abuse driven by a hot, juicy, boiling subconscious volcano within. The 10th house power complexes cannot be resolved when there is avoidance of the dark side of the 4th house. A balanced 4th and 10th house polarity creates a complete clearing of the subconscious, while use of power becomes a love for self and all beings—the open heart.

11th House

THE ELEVENTH HOUSE

  • Outer Influences:oneminutechange

The Eleventh House shows your  karma around groups and community.

With Uranus placed here, the soul has tried to bring in revolution and revolt. With Saturn, it has attempted to keep the status quo. When power-hungry Pluto shows up, the struggles go way back in time. If Neptune makes itself known, then past illusions, delusions, and deceptions may have to be atoned for.

Polarity Five: oneminutechange<->oneminutechange

The 11th house rules the discovery of purpose on this planet in relation to all other beings, and its key word is gift. It is through our service that we give back to the planet all that we have created here. The 11th house is in polarity relationship with the 5th house—creativity and the child—and the key word for the polarity is playing.
Both houses teach the releasing of energies back into the cosmos with trust, and this process cannot occur without the mastery of these houses. Thus, if power is not mastered, purpose cannot be known, just as without the journey through the dark, new creation cannot emerge. The harmonious state of the 5th and 11th houses is the fountain of creativity that keeps on releasing new creations and delights. The polarity resolution of the 5th and 11th houses occurs automatically when individuals master the conflicts at mid-life crisis. Thus, personal mid-life crisis resolution will release our creativity back to the planet, and that is why mid-life crisis is both a personal and planetary issue.
But why resolve our mid-life crisis?

12th House

THE TWELFTH HOUSE

  • Outer Influences: crystalhouse

This is the most karmic house of all. When the soul sets out on the journey of incarnation, it stands on the  looking out around the chart. The Twelfth House is immediately' behind. This hidden House is the deficit on our karmic credit card. Whatever planets lurk here indicate karma. Issues connect to the qualities of the planet. So, is aggression, warmars, and assertion,  love and eroticism, the mind and communication, the  emotions and feelings and deeply ingrained patterns from the past, and karma with the mother or mother-figurescassiopeiakun-8 andromeda pegasus

This House can give you an indication of where you may have incarnated in the past or the type of work you may have done.

If you have here, you will have been present at many upheavals and revolutions (social and natural). You may well have been at the Fall of Atlantis, the volcanic eruption that swamped Pompeii and similar sites, or the Frenchthe eifel tower alignement or the eifel tower alignementAmerican Revolutions. You will have worked with technology and revolutionary new ideas.

With Uranus in the Twelfth House, déjà vu experiences and spontaneous memories of other lives are common. People with "priestly" memories—especially of Egyptsphinks ondelta—often have placed in the Twelfth House.

If  or the Sun lurk in the Twelfth House, you can expect memories of having been "important." King=8½°10½° 16½° 22½° 28°, emperor, bishop, popethe pope, general, or minor variations of these roles will feature.

Pluto placed here has often been a doctor alien kingor healer pomegranate in the past and may well have brought a vocation or hidden talent into the present life, but Pluto is also associated with war, as is . Very different karma accrues when a war is fought from a deep conviction rather than as a conscript with no choice but to fight; and how the soul conducts itself within the war also creates karma. Plutonian power happens behind the scenes, in the general who directs the battle, for example.

People with the  in the Twelfth House have had important positions in the past but somehow seem fated not to gain the recognition they deserve this time around. It is as if they are having to experience anonymity to balance the fame and adulation they enjoyed last time around. The sun can indicate karma with the father or authority figures and surrogate fathers

When  falls in the Twelfth House, the soul may take on a huge chunk of suffering to make up for previously avoiding suffering. It can indicate a person who has inhabited an ivory towerthe eifel tower alignement in the past, cut off from events in the rest of the world. This is the monk or nun who withdraws into silence. Neptune here may also indicate addiction and escapism of all kinds. This House has strong links with institutions and prisons. The prison may not be physical; it can be mental or emotional.

Polarity Six: crystalhouseoneminutechange

The 12th house, with the key word of bliss, is the reason. The 12th house is samadil ecstasy Ibliss l divine communion. We cannot get to ecstasy without knowing our purpose and giving all our powers back, because this emptying creates space for spiritual infusion. The 12th house is in polarity relationship to the 6th house—getting into present time—and its key word is fusing. The most curious truth about the six polarities—which create the Star of David—is that you can't get to bliss, to the timeless, unless you enter fully into time! And the real irony is that you lose the bliss if you try to hold it or stop it in time. The way to move into the present moment is to give your gift—that is, give everything away—and then you will discover the key to samadhi: every time you totally offer your gift to the cosmos, you go into bliss. We accumulate cosmic chips777 just by giving! This is the same as the Native American teaching of the giveaway. It is our holding onto, our need for control, that keeps us from exactly what we desire. Go ahead and take your power, give your gift, and then enjoy fusional ecstasy.
